The start of a new season and weather is always a concern!

I often have parents and playersasking...Are you playing soccer today or are we having practice today? It's rainy, It's cold out, do we have to have a soccer practice? My answer normally, as I stick out my chest and let my ego get a bit ruffled is...We are soccer players and we play outside in bad weather !

Understandably nobody wants little Johnny or Susie out there getting all wet , cold and sick but I do have to make a point of the fact Soccer is an outdoor sport and we do need to learn to play in the elements. With that said lets take a moment and talk about some common sense solutions to outdoor weather.

I totally understand not everybody can afford to get there kids new outdoor gear every season. Our players have a tendency of growing two inches between seasons and nothing fits any longer, including those $80 soccer cleats you just bought last Spring! So what do we need to do to be prepared?
Knowing the local weather forecast is a start but, we know here in Indiana that it changes almost by the hour at times so we need to be prepared for anything.

Proper cold weather dress:
Dress in layers - Shorts under the sweats, long sleeve shirts or body armour under the jersey. Yes, you can wear a jacket under the jersey but only if it is not a hoodie or has strings hanging out. Knit gloves, mittens and sock hats. When playing competitive and Rec league soccer you just have to make sure the uniform looks the same for the entire team. Be sure your under shirt matches as closely as you can to the color of the jersey and if allowed to play in sweat pants they have to be same color as team shorts. You also have to have same color socks for everybody on the team.

What you can not wear :
You can not wear hoodie sweat shirts, scarves or any other dangly, loose fitting clothing. These can lead to accidents as a player runs buy and a hand, arm or even foot can get caught in them. In most competitive and Rec leagues you also must remove or tape down all jewelry and wristbands.
Only medical ID jewelry is allowed but it must be taped down.

Bad weather attitudes:
With any foul weather can come foul moods and understandably so if you're the parent or volunteer standing out there for a couple hours waiting on games to be finished. However, allow me to close with this thought. Our kids are playing Soccer to have fun and in many cases they enjoy being out in the rain as it is one of the few time they are allowed to do so. I would never tell a player they have to go play in bad weather if they are not feeling well or coming off an injury but we need to be as positive as we can for that player so they also learn a little about commitment to a team and to them selves. Smile and keep up a positive attitude when your player grumbles a little about practice in good or bad weather...once they get on the pitch they normally come off happy that they got to play!

Make it a great Soccer day and we'll see you...On the Pitch!

PS.. I might add that most games will be canceled if the temps are below 40 degrees, heavy rain and of course thunderstorms with lightening. However if its around 40 with a light rain or even snow flurries...yep we are going to try and get them in. We might shorten the time of the game from 20 minute halves to 15 minute halves but we will try to play!!
